A Message from the Assessor

The assessor is a local government official who estimates the value of real property containing approximately 6,500 parcels within the Town's boundaries. This value is then converted into an assessment, which is one component in the computation of real property tax bills.

At the regular December 2009 Town Board Meeting, a resolution was approved to complete an assessment update for the 2010 Assessment Roll.

The Town of East Greenbush has an appointed assessor who is appointed by the Town Board for a period of six years. The assessor and staff maintain the assessment roll – the document that contains every property's assessment. To do this, the physical description, or inventory, and value estimate of every parcel of real property in the municipality is kept-up-to-date.

The assessor also updates new construction, and major improvements to existing structures as to maintain a current value. In addition, the assessor administers property tax exemptions (STAR, Senior Enhanced STAR, Veterans, and Agriculture).We review every transfer in the municipality and the basic information on the buyer, seller and sale price is reviewed for accuracy. The assessment records are then updated.

AIS (Assessment Information System)

The Assessment Information system (AIS) gives multi levels of information to the public and is an ongoing effort to improve the delivery of services to our taxpayers and to the general public. It provides a single, easy to use, point of access to almost all information maintained by the assessor including assessment roll data, tax maps, property's photo, sketch, building permits, tax rates, exemption amounts, comparable sales and comparable assessments. This tool is provided by a 2005 and 2006 grant that was awarded to the Town of East Greenbush by the NYS Office of Real Property Services. The current members making up the consortium are the Towns of East Greenbush, Sand Lake, Schodack and the Cities of Rensselaer and Troy, with Brad Canning serving as the Project Manager.

Key Dates Affecting the Assessment Process:

• Exemption filing deadline is March 1st
• May 1st –Tentative Assessment is filed. Change of Assessment Notices are mailed May – 1 10th/Tentative Assessment Roll is available from may 1st to Grievance Day (the 4th Tuesday in May)
• Grievance Day – 4th Tuesday in May in the EG Town Hall, 225 Columbia Turnpike, Rensselaer, NY 12144 please call 518-477-9710 to make an appointment. WHAT TO DO IF YOU DISAGREE WITH YOUR ASSESSMENT includes instructions and blank complaint application (Form RP524) which MUST BE FILED BY Grievance Day.
