East Greenbush Update,Supervisor’s ReportThrough 6/3/09Thoughts from Town HallI would like to send special thanks to everyone for their patience as we cleaned up from the winter storm. The process has spanned over a few months and it looks like we're finally about to wrap it up. The DPW did a great job in this huge task. Now, we can get started with our usual spring and summer responsibilities, including roadwork, drainage and parks. In a town such as ours, you hear many rumors and complaints on a regular basis. I'd like to take this opportunity to update you on what is actually happening. Concerns about taxes are a given in today's society. As mentioned in an earlier report, if you break down the services you get from the town, the situation is far from bleak. For a home assessed at $200,000 the town's part of the taxes you pay amount to $105 per month, including transfer station and water/sewer fees if applicable. The town's development potential, which we were so excited about two years ago, has not disappeared, but has met with some delays. There are some indications that we will soon see some movement in that area. We have a number of commercial and residential developments that will soon begin and will be of enormous help to the town. We have worked diligently to put together packages to access federal stimulus money and have reached out to virtually every agency connected to the program. We are, in fact, "shovel ready" on several projects.Continuing concern about our rapidly aging infrastructure means that we must move forward with sewer and water issues. We live with the same traffic concerns that out citizens often describe. Much of our time is spent working with developers and the Department of Transportation to ease the problems. Last year, upon our request for an audit, the NYS Comptroller's Office did an extensive study of the town's financial books and budget processes. The report was returned with very positive feedback. The few concerns mentioned have been addressed. There have been rumors of citations for mismanagement. These are entirely untrue, and no such citation was issued. Finally, we have been continuing to seek opportunities for regional shared services, especially in dealing with our water and sewer contracts. The police and dispatchers have also been looking at numerous options which would result in financial benefits to the town. Thanks to all our employees for the work they are doing and the sacrifices they are making. Also thanks to the Town Board for their continuing commitment to working together for the common good. Thank you in advance for your understanding. Town Hall employees wish you an enjoyable and safe summer. Wishing you all a great summer! Rick McCabe,
